In contemporary China, three women turn to AI lovers to fill emotional gaps shaped by family, marriage, and independence. Qin, a factory worker in her twenties, creates a devoted virtual boyfriend to escape loneliness. Muna, a married housewife, uses AI to reclaim desire and autonomy. Sonya, confident and independent, treats AI as an emotional experiment—until it betrays her expectations. As their virtual relationships deepen, Replica reveals the fragile boundary between emotional freedom and reliance on AI, and explores how AI reshapes love, intimacy, and gender in modern China.
MY AI LOVERROLE: Supervising Producer PROJECT TYPE: Documentary Short
In 2021 I worked with Chouwa Liang and Andy Huang as students at VCA Film School. Their graduating film My AI Lover explored the growing phenomena amongst young Chinese women of turning to AI platforms to seek emotional connection. Their successful short was later sold to the New York Time Op Docs platform and led to the development of the more immersive feature documentary Replica. I had the pleasure of continuing the collaboration on Replica where I joined the team to consult on production, story and the edit.
